Who has decided the level?

Our team of language experts have decided the word level for each word. We have sorted and compared over 15000 words, and have cross checked these for consistency.

How has the level been decided?

levelling process is extensive and complex, and each word has been
individually assessed by our language experts. In its simplest form, there are various factors which will affect how the level has been allocated,
either increasing the difficulty or decreasing the difficulty. We have about
15 rules that we consider when levelling a word, for example:

a) How long is the word.
b) How common is the word.
c) How close is the spelling to the pronunciation, ie how easy is it to simply
hear the spelling once the ear is familiar with English sounds.
d) Does it have, or might it have double letters.
e) Is it a homophone

… and a whole host of criteria which are applied. These criteria give us a
good indication, and the final level is always a judgement call by our

of spelling difficulty is often about your own particular spelling strengths and weaknesses, as well as your level of
exposure to the particular word. How you hear the word also matters – while
you may have no trouble at all with identifying a certain sound, others may
struggle to discern the correct spelling.

You may have had a teacher who brilliantly explained and trained some
particular aspects of spelling, and therefore some things which are difficult
for most people may seem extremely easy for you.

So we strongly suggest that
you make your own judgement as well, and use our levelling as a guide and
general tool to help you on your path to becoming a better speller, as well as using it as a guide for selecting the most suitable word packs for you.

Level 15

Level 15
is the highest level of spelling difficulty, and as such contains a fairly
wide spectrum of words, from those which are just slightly more difficult
than level 14 words, to very rare and exceptionally difficult to spell words.
Unless you are playing the Extreme word pack, we are not going to throw
ridiculously difficult or totally obscure and uncommon words at you.
